Irritable Bowel Syndrome or "spastic colon"
Aloe Vera may hold the answers to Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), which affects an estimated quarter of the adult population and twice as many women as men, is now the leading cause of absenteeism after the common cold.
No one is sure exactly what causes Irritable Bowel Syndrome, so as a result doctors tend to diagnose irritable bowel syndrome by eliminating other disorders with similar symptoms, such as diverticulitis, Ulcerative Colitis, Peptic Ulcers, Crohns and inflammatory bowel disease.
One thing is for sure it is a good idea to tackle irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) as soon as it starts - if you ignore it, it will only get worse and can, according to nutritionists who specialise in digestive problems, lead to more serious conditions such as colitis and even, at worst, cancer of the colon.
Make Sure it is IBS
If you think you have it - your first step is to get a definitive diagnosis. I can't stress the importance of this enough - there is absolutely no way that IBS can be self-diagnosed, because there are so many other conditions which cause bowel problems. At the very least you will need to rule out conditions such as Crohn's Disease, celiac disease, and bowel cancer.
I believe this is so important it's worth doing it twice. If you are a woman you could simply have endometriosis, and anyone can suffer from lactose intolerance. So, if you haven't had a doctor say to you that you have IBS, keep going until you get a diagnosis.
The signs of Irritable Bowel Syndrome often include:-
 |
An on going bacterial, viral, or parasitic infection. Long-term use of antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs used to treat these symptoms are probably the biggest culprit. They lead to an overgrowth in the gut of fermenting bacteria that thrive on oxygen. Their activities and their toxic by-products lead to increased production of hydrogen and methane, damage to the intestinal wall and severely disrupted digestion |
 |
Adverse reactions to food and junk diets that are high in sugar and fat. Two-thirds of (IBS) sufferers, have food intolerances. The worst culprits are wheat, dairy, coffee, tea, citrus fruits, and lactose (the sugar in cow's milk.) In 20% of sufferers, potatoes are a problem too. An elimination diet that removes these foods has been shown help. Unfortunately many gasteroenterologists never prescribe dietary changes to help patients recover |
 |
Highly sensitive smooth muscle tissue |
 |
Inflammation in the lining of the intestine |
 |
Stress |
 |
Stomach cramps and Abdominal pain |
 |
Continual alternation between constipation and diarrhoea |
This makes IBS a condition people don't like to talk about which leaves many suffering in silence.
Note: The skin is a reflection of the digestive system - conditions such as eczema or psoriasis may develop as a result of an underlying problem in the digestive tract. Read more on controlling Irritable Bowel Syndrome with diet.
How can Aloe Vera help with Irritable Bowel Sydrome?
Aloe Vera juice is the Irritable Bowel Syndrome sufferer's nectar. Many IBS sufferers are found to be lacking in the B vitamins. Aloe Vera combines all these stress-busting nutrients.
Aloe vera is a virtual gold mine of health-supporting phytonutrients - many of the phytonutrients in Aloe Vera haven't been discovered yet.
The intestine is a highly complex multi-purpose organ with an important role in immunity against disease and allergy control. It is therefore important to keep it in tip top condition.
The cells of the intestines are the fastest growing cells in the body (replaced every 4 days or so) so they have to be continually replenished to maintain the immunity barrier.
The main fuel they need is the amino acid I-glutamine; we do not get much of this in our diet. Aloe Vera contains this substance thereby enhancing the ability of cell regeneration.
If "leaking gut syndrome" develops - where unwanted substances and toxins are absorbed through the gut walls and into the blood stream causing havoc in the immune system (This condition is also suspected as being a major factor in a wide range of food and chemical sensitivities, arthritis, asthma, candida, headaches, digestive problems and chronic fatigue).
Long chain polysaccarides that repair these tiny "holes" are also contained in Aloe Vera. Aloe Vera has amazing anti-inflamatory attributes which are very effective in calming the intestinal spasms that cause abdominal pain, as well as soothing other Irritable Bowel Syndrome Symptoms.
Because Aloe Vera is natural, it works gently within the intestinal tract to help break down food residues that have become impacted and help clean out the bowel. When the bowel is cleaned out, it greatly reduces bloating, discomfort, and helps ease stress. Removing stress is great as it is a major contributor of more more attacks of irritable bowel syndrome.
Aloe Vera contains 75 nutrients - Vitamins, minerals, amino acids and enzymes essential for keeping your body in good working order. These nutrients are in a natural and synergic form which are easily metabolised in the human body to promote good health.

Need Some Evidence?
A clinical trial involving 44 patients suffering from Ulcerative Colitis was completed in January 2004 at the Royal London Hospital and the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. The trial results showed there was an improvement in 38% of Patients given Aloe Vera gel as opposed to 8% given a placebo.
You need to buy Aloe Vera products from a completely trusted source. Unfortunately many commercial products are not what they are cracked up to be.
