pretty bad sunburn, pregnant and in alott of pain. help?

i went to the beach yesterday for mothers day with my mom and family. I had sunblock on, but apparently not enough. I was out in the sun for about 15 minutes and my legs from hip down to toes got burnt. Pretty bad. My legs are now stiff from not walking right. and it hurts alott. i took a hot shower last night, which now i know i was supposed to do that with a bad sunburn. ):
i also put some “sooth-a-caine” gel with aloe vera and vitamin e cooling relief and i put some vinegar any tips on how to take the heat out. and be able to sleep okay tonight. The sunburn in mostly on my legs. my arms and shoulders hurt just not as bad as my legs. My back is sorta burnt.
what kind of med can i take being 11 weeks pregnant?
What should i wear during the day, going out?

Susan asks…

Can someone give me help for a peeling sunburn?

I was at the lake for a whole week. I dont usually burn and when we went out on a boat I didnt think about putting sunscreen on my face. It didnt really hurt that day but the next it did so I put on aloe vera freeze gel and sun screen later. For the next couple days parts of my face mainly my forehead felt painful and leathery. Yesterday when i got home my nose was peeling, then my cheeks and chin, and eventually today my forehead is peeling. I know I shouldnt peel it or scratch but I want it to go away. Ive put lotion, cucumbers, milk, all kinds of crazy stuff on it. Some of the pain is gone but it still looks and feels HORRIBLE. How long will it peel? How long will it take for the redness of the new skin to go away? PLEASE HELP

Simon Smith answers:

Stay outta the sun for about a week.Drink plenty of liquids.Take aspirin and call me in the morning.OK,the last two you don’t have to do.I know it seems like a long time but it will pass.

George asks…

help me please! i cant take it?

please help i have a super bad sunburn and i cant take it my arms, shoulders and face hurt so badly…… my face especilly even my eyelids are a little burned but my face is burned EXTREMELY bad. i was stupid and forgot to put on sunscreen. so you dont need to say anything mean cause i no i was stupid and dont need to be reminded. does anyone no anything that will help please im desprate

p.s i already put on aloe vera spray and the gel and i took a cold bath and it still hurts super bad and i have a headache now.

Simon Smith answers:

Sounds like its quite a burn. First, hydrate yourself, massively. Isotonic drinks (chilled) will do wonders for you. Secondly, you can pop a painkiller such as panadol for the pain for temporary pain relief.

From what you described, it’d seem like your first skin barrier might have been burnt off, consider seeing a dermatologist or a general practitioner (or family doctor/physician) for creams that will provide a protective layer on your skin to prevent infections and hasten healing.

Keep hydrating yourself, and keep yourself out of the burning sun for now, or at least until you recover. Avoid scratching healing skin, for sometimes it becomes really itchy as it heals, it’s part of the healing process.

Charles asks…

severe itching! help asap!!?

my gf has a sunburn on her back well i rubbed lotion and a&d ointment on it, now she is having severe itching. the only thing that soothes it is aloe vera after sun gel for like ten seconds. please help what can we do to stop it for good thank you -jay
i have given her a benadryl we are waiting for it to kick in. thank you all for your answers it has helped us a lot.

Simon Smith answers:

Wet a hand towel – and lay on her back (cool, not cold) – and help take the “heat” out – Only use the AV after sun – not the lotion or a&d – as there must be something in it she is having a reaction to –
If you have one – let her take a Benadryl (and maybe a Tylenol/Advil for pain) –
She also needs to drink lots of water to keep hydrated –
I read somewhere recently that you can put flour (yes, the kind you cook with) – on a burn and it helps pull out the heat – although it might be messy – you might want to try to on the worse places – Just put a handful of flour – put a cloth over it – and let it “sit” for a while – then just dump it off – I would use a towel or old sheet under her — and leave any residual flour there – and wear an over sized t-shirt to bed –shower in the AM –
Good luck — nothing more miserable than a sunburn — It may take several days to get the redness out –
If she starts blistering badly – or vomiting or having other symptoms – shemight need to see a Dr. – as it could be sun stroke or sun poisoning -

Laura asks…

PLEASE HELP. How can I stop my sunburn from itching? :| ?

I was at a festival yesterday, so I was standing in the sun for most of the day, even though I tried to avoid it at all costs by hiding behind tall people. My face burned quite badly, it was sore last night so follwing the advice of a friend I rubbed tomatoes on my face, this did help and I was able to finally get to sleep. However today it’s a different story, tomatoes make it sting, to the point where I’m almost crying. I NEED something to get rid of the itching, something that I will most likely have in my house, as its almost midnight and I can’t go out until the morning. Please help? I’m begging lol.

Btw, I don’t have any aloe vera creams or gels, or any other types of anti-itching creams, I’m looking for good old remedies like my friends tomato idea :) thanks!

Simon Smith answers:

Take a Benadryll and rub on some aloe, if the burn is gone you can start to re hydrate the skin with baby oil then put on aloe. Don’t put on oil unless the heat is out of the burn!

Your Questions About Aloe Gel Does Work

Chris asks…

How Can I get rid of a hypertrophic scar naturally or at home?

Hi, I have a hypertrophic scar on my arm. I have done research and I know that this is a hypertrophic scar and not a keloid scar. I’ve had it for about a year now. It’s kind of the shape of a football it’s about an inch in length and a half and inch in width. I feel really insecure about it and I really would like to get rid of it withought going through treatments from doctors, surgery etc.. I would just like to know if there is something that I can use at home to get rid of this scar.. and how long will it take for it to go away? I’ve heard of tea tree oil, vitamin e, and aloe vera gel do theese products work and if so how long will they take. And if you know of any other products that can help me with it I would greatly apperciate that. Thank you in the future and pleeease help me with this, it would really mean alot.
If you know of any products how would I use or apply theese products to my scar?

Simon Smith answers:

From experience with scars, I know of two things that will help, although they will take a while.

Sun screen
Being out in the sun

Sun screen has the same active ingredients as most scar creams. Being out in the sun helps fades scars.

I’m not sure of the other products, but that’s what I have to offer.

Susan asks…

How do I get rid of this sunburn!??

Ok, well my family had a garage sale yesterday, and it was windy and overcast most of the day. Then around 1:00 it started getting sunny. If I had known that, I would have worn sunscreen, but it was too late. Now I have a really bad sunburn, and I have school tomorrow. And I HAVE to go because we’re taking our TAKS tests the whole week. Anyone have any tips as to how I can make it fade at least a little by tomorrow? I’ve been putting on lots of aloe vera gel and lotion, but its not really working.
Thanks for all the answers so far everyone…well if it really takes a while for it to fade, what are some good makeups that will help cover it up?

Simon Smith answers:

Silvadene applied to the sunburn will give rapid pain relief, and seems to stop a lot of the discomfort. You may have to get a prescription for it. I am not sure if it is available without one.

Ruth asks…

Anyone going thru PUPP rash??

I am 32 weeks pregnant with Twins and didn’t even know this rash existed. Does anyone have any advice as to what might work? I have tried Aloe Vera Gel and Gold Bond powder and that works for abt 1-2 hours so I can get a little of sleep. This is so depressing…..

Simon Smith answers:

Here’s some tips I found on what works for PUPP:

Try taking an oatmeal or baking soda bath; or applying cold compresses

Benedryl and Calamine lotion (the old- fashioned pink kind, not the Caladryl) works.

Dermatop by Aventis helps

1- Take a warm shower. 2- Clean your bath tub and fill it half with hot water. 3- Add one cup of (or more if you want to) dry mint leaves. Let it brew. 4- Add cold water to make the water warm and safe for the baby. 5- Stay in the mint-leaves-all-over-bath tub for 20-30 minutes. 6- Before getting out and taking a shower, rub your body with the mint leaves with the help of a sponge – especially itchy areas!- This helps you for about 4-6 hours. You might itch -just like a few mosquito bites here and there- but not all over! Repeat it as much as you need to. I do it in the morning before going to work and at night before going to bed.

Use BasisCreme after the shower.(Glaxo-Smith-Kline makes this, your Dr. Can prescribe if needed)

Take Calcium C tablets regularly.

Avoid direct sun

Avoid ”allergy known” food such as tomatoes, orange, peaches

Avoid any products that have caffeine. Caffeine can make itching worse.

Hope this info brings you some relief from this rash! Good luck!

Chris asks…

How to heal a painful, rough, annoying sunburn?

Ok, so here’s the story. Last Saturday my friends and I went tubing (on our stomachs) and I was very stupid and didn’t put on any sunscreen on the back of my legs. I in turn got very painfully burnt and even 6 days later my skin is red and sensitive. The first few days i just laid in bed and put on aloe vera gel etc, and today one of my legs started to peel so I peeled it (IDK if that’s bad…) and now it is still sensitive and the skin is VERY rough.. I tried exfoliating but it didn’t work. the other leg is even redder (I think peeling helped a little bit with the redness) but still rough. What should I do???

Please please please give me input. Tomorrow I’m leaving for camp (out in the sun wearing shorts) and if I am still red and in pain it will SUCK.

thanks :)
ps Im a girl.. (if that matters)

Simon Smith answers:

Burn Jel-Plus is absolutely PERFECT for burns! It soothes and keeps it from getting infected it lasts up to six hours, and makes the pain go away almost immediately. It’s $8.99 at Walgreens same price also available at Wal-Mart.

Maria asks…

Is there any way to cure a really bad sunburn?

I was helping a friend move into her house today and got badly burnt on my face, neck and my right arm. My cheeks and neck don’t bother me so much, but I feel like my arm is on fire. I’ve tried Aloe Vera gel, Tylenol, even putting a milk-drenched cloth on my arm (I heard that it stops the burning). The only thing that seemed to stop it was when I took a bath. But the problem is, I have to work tomorrow morning, and I don’t know if the burning will have stopped by then. I’m also afraid that it’ll keep me up tonight and put me in a bad mood come morning. I was wondering if there was anything else I could do to soothe the pain, at least in my arm.

Simon Smith answers:

The best after-sun product I have ever used is called Ocean Potion Moisturizing Aloe Lotion. It helped me from not peeling and kepted my skin soft and moisturized. I love how thick and creamy it is. Soaks in fast and is not greasy.

Helen asks…

OUCH SUNBURN!!?!?! HELPPP?

I got sunburn on my back on monday. everything was fine it was just burning and i cant sleep at night because it burned.but today i woke up it was fine untill i went outside rollerblading with my friend. i second i walked outside my back with itchy and it felt like needles or pins were poking me in my back and like bugs were crawling all over me.we rollerbladed a little and it hurt sooo muchh. i got home took a cold shower and then put on aloe vera cooling gel and it didnt help. then i put on the aloe vera cream & nothing it stilll itches and i have the poking needle feeling and ive tried everything. i put sour cream on also and NOTHING! i cant take this anymore. im panicking pleaseee helppp meee and make this feeling STOP! i dont know what to do anymore!

Simon Smith answers:

You should just calm down have someone look at it to see how bad it is , and second most of your current pain is from fear of having damaged your skin , just go to a doctor or let any family member see it , just dont touch it and make things worst

Mark asks…

How Bad is the Sunburn?

I was at the beach in the pool for about 4 hours yesterday. I applied sunscreen on before I went in, but didn’t pay much attention after and forgot to reapply. My face, chest, upper arms, shoulders, upper back, and neck are burnt (the shoulders and upper back are the worst). There are no blisters or purple type coloring, but it is extremely painful to change shirts/bras. I lay down on my back and I feel like I’m on an oven, but laying on my stomach makes me have to ‘bend’ my back, which hurts just as bad. It feels worse today than it did yesterday, and I tried Aloe Vera, Solarcaine gel and spray, ibuprofen, and none of it has helped.

How bad of a burn does it sound like, and any suggestions for tonight so I can actually sleep?

Simon Smith answers:

Been there, done that girl! Ibuprofen is not going to help your sunburn, but acetominophen probably will. Maybe taking some Tylenol PM will help you sleep, but with sunburns- time is the only remedy! Be sure to keep your skin moisturized, moisturized, moisturized! Avoid cold showers because in the long run they dry out your skin and you don’t need any help doing that right now!

Good luck… And remember the waterproof, sweatproof, 8 hour sunblock next time!

It then got scabs on it, and today I noticed some clear blisters around it. Does anyone know what degree burn it is, and what I should do about it? I’m already applying burn gel and aloe vera on it through out the day. Thanks in advanced for help!
