Like me you probably have at least one memory of a nasty childhood sunburn - you remember - the hot red skin that was painful to touch, the stuff Mum sprayed all over it to cool it off, and the flaking and peeling that came later.
As a young boy I was always outside playing and my sunburn frequently developed into blisters.
Once I even developed a fever, chills, with nausea and vomiting. It didn't seem to matter what I was upto though, there certainly was (still is) something about that warm feeling of the sun on your face or back gives you..... it just makes you want to rip off all your clothes and frolic about like a new born lamb.
There is a very good reason for this. And your body instictively knows it. Sunlight is the one of the best and easily accessable forms of Vitamin D.
Among other things Vitamin D is essential for the assimilation of calcium...
It's interesting to note that since sunscreens became easily available, the incidence of skin cancer, arthritis, osteoporosis, heart disease rates have steadily been on the increase. Sunlight also helps your body to produce Melanin which is your bodies way of protecting your skin from cancer by turning it brown. Sunscreen also blocks this process.
This begs the Question
Why is it that skin cancer in tropical countries, where the suns rays are the strongest, is lower than skin cancer rates in the US?
What causes Sunburn
The sun emits ultraviolet (UV) radiation that is divided into three bands: UVA, UVB, and UVC. Virtually all UVC is filtered by the atmosphere (i.e. ozone layer), so it does not reach the earth's surface. Sunburn is caused by exposure to UVA and UVB rays. As the Earth’s ozone layer thins, we are even more vulnerable to ultraviolet (UV) rays that can cause skin cancer.
SPF - Sun Protection Factor
The measurement used by sunscreen manufacturers to tell you the potential protection from UV exposure is the "sun protection factor" or "SPF". The SPF is only a measurement of protection from UVB, so a sunscreen product may not protect against UVA, which can still cause skin damage. It is important to protect against UVA and UVB rays.
Prevention is the Best Cure
Dermatologists agree that sunscreen should be a third line of defense against exposure to the sun's harmful rays. The best way to deal with a sunburn is to avoid getting sunburnt in the first place. So, whenever you're out working or playing in the sun, be sure to take the following precautions:
 |
At least 15 minutes before going out into the sun, cover all areas of exposed skin with a sunscreen containing a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. A broad spectrum is best - good for all UV rays. |
 |
Avoid midday sun, if possible, from 10am until 2pm |
 |
Reapply sunscreen every hour while out in the sun, and more often if you are perspiring heavily, swimming or have a sun sensitive skin. |
 |
Wear protective clothing, including a long-sleeve shirt and a hat. |
 |
Since ultraviolet rays can filter through clouds, take the above precautions even on cloudy days. |
 |
Be aware that certain medications, including many antibiotics, tranquilizers and diuretics, can increase your susceptibility to sunburn. While taking these or other medications check with your pharmacist or physician about any increased risk for sunburn. |
 |
Feed yourself from the "inside". When your body gets what it needs, it then has the opportunity to address its health challenges. |
Aloe Vera Sunburn Remedies
If you take the proper protective measures, you shouldn't get burned. But if you do, you'll want to seek treatment that will do two things: cool the skin to help ease the pain and moisturize the skin with ingredients that promote healing. Aloe vera is commonly used to treat sunburn.
The thick, jelly-like substance found in the leaf of the plant, aloe vera gel is soothing probably due in part to anthraquinones (natural analgesics).
Because it is naturally rich in substances such as vitamins A, C, E and amino acids, it may also accelerate healing.
